Press Release – VISCOPIC wins Delina Award 2020

Munich, 12.03.2020. Often content is taught in theory that makes one wonder in practice how it should actually work – it all sounded so simple and logical in training? There are many different types of learners and most of them find it difficult to understand the subject without any practical experience. Projects with Augmented Reality have shown that technology can have a positive impact on learners’ learning behavior. Not only can learning content be addressed in a completely different way, the use of Augmented Reality also creates emotions. Information linked to emotions is better understood and stored by the brain. This is helpful for particularly complex topics in order to make them more interesting.

At LearnTec, Europe’s leading trade fair for digital education, the innovation prize for digital education, Delina, was awarded in four categories in February 2020: early childhood education and school, university, training and further education as well as society and lifelong learning. Concepts and projects that integrate innovative future technologies and media into everyday learning were honored. Each project submitted was assessed by a jury of 21 experts from the field of digital education.

There were 138 entries this year, twice as many as in the previous year. As an expert in digital education, VISCOPIC was among the top three projects in digital further education.

VISCOPIC wins innovation award for digital education at LEARNTEC

The Munich start-up received the Delina award 2020 in the category training and further education. They were chosen due to their joint project “3D-Durchblick” with Deutsche Bahn. Since 2018 Augmented Reality Workforce training has been implemented in education facilities throughout Germany. 

Deutsche Bahn employs over 8,000 maintenance technicians in their infrastructure, half of whom will retire from active working life in the next few years. Many young employees have to be trained; however, there is no way to bring real technology, such as a switch point, into the classroom. VISCOPIC has developed a solution that makes railway technology descriptive and serves to increase the security of action for employees and young professionals. Part of the infrastructure is mapped virtually and conveyed digitally using augmented reality. This way, the system to be trained can easily be integrated into the lecture, faults can be simulated and interrelationships can be shown. In applications for tablets and Microsoft HoloLens, three-dimensional representations, for example of point machines, are projected as virtual objects into the real environment. These realistic holograms can be rotated in all directions. Functional sequences can be triggered and animated with fingertips on virtual buttons. Not only does this improve the training quality, the level of action is further increased and theory and practice lessons are optimally intertwined. VISCOPIC’s solution helps to close the gap between theory and practice in training of maintenance technicians at Deutsche Bahn.

The Delina Award jury was impressed by the project. “This project impressively combines the interplay of the analog and digital learning world. The focus lies on integrating state-of-the-art applications such as Augmented Reality and mobile learning.”
