A pleasant train journey is not only dependent on a comfortable train, it also requires a sound infrastructure. At DB Netz AG 8000 maintenance engineers are responsible for maintaining the rail network. However, the challenge is that by 2026 half of them will retire and new employees will have to be trained. Therefore, together with DB, we have virtually recreated a part of the company’s infrastructure to educate new employees and lateral recruits for training models, digitally with Augmented Reality. This is how we help companies improve their training quality, security of action as well as the interaction of theory and practice.
Via Augmented Reality (AR) glasses, 3D representations of rail switches are projected into virtuality. The realistic holograms can be rotated into every direction, functional routines can be triggered through fingertips on virtual controls and animations can be shown. This way, the assembly of a rail switch lock or the trouble shooting of rail switch errors can be taught in a well-founded manner to employees without any major effort.
Also, graphically prepared step-by-step manuals enable repair works in real time. The advantage for DB-customers: Rail switch disruptions are solved quickly and rail transport works smoothly and reliably.
The advantages that the projects provides for the operating principles of switch mechanic did not remain unnoticed from the public. This is why the project “3D-Durchblick” was awarded with the German eLearning Award 2019 in the category Augmented Reality.
