Choosing the right technology for your use case

Choosing the right technology for your use case

Being spoilt for choice

In today’s digital age, countless technologies are available that promise process optimization. This can be of great advantage, as there are a multitude of possibilities; however, the selection of suitable technologies and their implementation can be difficult. In such a large number of possible approaches, the overview can quickly be lost. This article presents some relevant technologies for process optimization and shows how a decision can be made and implemented.

Technologies for process optimization and digitization explained

Depending on the use case, different approaches can be applied individually or in combination. Due to the large number of different technologies, this results in a variety of possible solutions. In the following, some of the fundamental technologies are explained and examined in detail.

Virtual Reality is already familiar to many people. The creation of virtual worlds can be helpful in training courses, for example, when complex matters or machines are to be represented virtually in order to transfer knowledge based on the models.

In Augmented Reality, purely virtual environments are not displayed, but the real environment is enriched by computer-generated objects. In this way information can be transmitted as holograms in direct relation to the position of a real object.

Using 2D and 3D computer vision, automatic object recognition is possible. Sensors detect the nature of objects and can thus ensure their clear identification. Furthermore, real objects can be compared with the corresponding CAD model by CAD processing. These technologies enable the tracking of work steps and their quality control. Components can be recorded and their correct positioning or processing can be displayed and checked for correctness.

Animations and 3D visualizations can be used in many areas. By simulating processes on virtual 3D models, they can be easily imitated or trained. The technology can be used, among other things, to guide work steps and processes and for training and instruction.

The development of mobile and web apps plays an increasingly important role. Applications for various purposes are implemented to convey information and redesign processes. By networking physical and virtual objects, the Internet of Things (IoT), a global structure of information properties can be created and the communication of data between objects made possible.

This overview shows some important technologies, but there are many more technological possibilities for digitizing and optimizing processes. The section above already shows how the technologies can be linked together. But how can the right technologies be identified for a particular use case? And which combination of approaches is suitable in specific cases?

VISCOPIC’s approach to innovative process optimization

The Munich-based startup VISCOPIC supports others in choosing the right technology for different applications. As an expert for innovative process optimization, the company can offer a wide selection of immersive assistance systems for the efficient design of processes. This enables time savings and error reductions to be achieved, while at the same time increasing the training efficiency and reliability of employees.

In the first phase of process digitization projects, the use case is identified. In a workshop with companies, VISCOPIC analyzes processes on site and conducts expert interviews and behavioral observation in order to generate ideas for process optimization based on the results.

Phase two consists of the identification of optimization potentials and the development of necessary measures. For this purpose, a storyboard is jointly prepared and the necessary data for a prototype is collected.

In phase three, a prototype is developed on the basis of a storyboard and the necessary data in a regular exchange. The result consists of an installable software including documentation. As an expert in digital solutions, VISCOPIC is able to use a wide selection of the above-mentioned technologies to put together the best possible solution from standard products and individual services. After the implementation of the prototype, user tests are carried out with different methods to obtain information about the added value of the solution.

The fourth phase is the implementation of a scalable software product. During the integration of the software solution VISCOPIC supports its customers as a direct implementation partner.

The use cases of VISCOPIC solutions are diverse and range from Augmented Reality work instructions for the installation, repair and maintenance of machines to industrial training on virtual images of plants and process optimization through the use of a wide range of digital state-of-the-art technologies.
